RED = SPOILERS:
This is #2 on my favorite movies list. Literally, my second favorite movie of all time. I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen this movie anymore. I know all the little easter eggs and trivia bits. I’m kind of big into zombies, too. Just in general. Because zombies aren’t really that dangerous, when you think about it. Slow zombies, anyway. Slow zombies can be corralled and then cordoned off. It’s not hard. You use the word “zombie” as an insult because they’re stupid and easily manipulated. You don’t call people zombies because they’re fast and easily adaptable. That’s the exact opposite of what a zombie is. Unless it’s those runner zombies from 28 Days Later. Then you’re kind of screwed. Although, to be fair, those aren’t actually zombies. They’re just infected humans. If they were to die, they wouldn’t come back to life as undead bodies. They’d just be dead. So technically, there is a difference. Just sayin…
What’s it about? So, anyways, Shaun of the Dead is about Shaun, obviously, who, through no fault of his own, gets caught up in the zombie apocalypse. But first, his girlfriend dumps him, it rains on him, a sad song plays on the jukebox, and his roommate tells him that he thinks he’s wasting his life. This all leads to Shaun waking up the next morning to find a zombie girl in his backyard. After he and his other roommate Ed discover that she is a zombie and are attacked by another larger zombie, they head inside to try and figure out what’s going on. Shaun figures out a plan, goes to get his girlfriend and her roommates. Or “flatmates” as they call them in jolly-Ol’ England. And head to The Winchester. A local pub. The zombies eventually attack while the gang are stuck inside and the climax of the movie ensues…
What’s good? Everything. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. There’s a joke every 10 seconds. I can’t stop laughing the entire time and I don’t know how many times I’ve seen it. There’s so many little things to point out and notice that it’s fun to just sit there and look for more because you never know if there might be. You can watch this movie over and over again and still laugh at it. It doesn’t have to be new to be funny.
What’s bad? I can’t think of a thing. I really can’t. Maybe it’s just because it’s my favorite and I’m biased, but just try and find me something that’s bad in this movie. Can’t do it… David’s kind of a douchebag. But that’s really just opinion. That’s got nothing to do with quality…
The acting? How can you make a great movie without great acting? It’s all just phenomenal. Even the zombies are doing great. All the zombies make great zombies. The sick people do really good jobs of looking like sick people, about to die from a virus that turns you into zombies…
The effects? They’re really good effects. I mean, you have to make them all look like zombies, right? You need a lot of blood and intestines everywhere. You’re gonna need gore for a zombie movie. And Shaun of the Dead has plenty of it. David gets his guts ripped right out when he gets dragged out of the Winchester window. And it looks pretty real to be honest with you.
The easter eggs. It’s kind of ridiculous after you know all of them, just how many easter eggs there are in this movie. I’m not gonna list them all right here, but rest assured, it’s a long list.
How it all ties together. The script has the first kind of a segment before the zombies start, and then the second kind of a segment after the zombies start. Like, before the zombies, Shaun tries to climb up Liz’s window and can’t make it and he has to climb back down and ask to be let in. And then after the zombies, he makes it all the way up to the window. Or, the first time Shaun walks from his house to the shop across the street, all the people that can be seen on the way there and back can be seen as zombies later in the movie.
The sharp dialogue. The dialogue in the movie is some of the best in any comedy. It’s fast, it’s sharp, ironically, it’s British. There’s just something about British comedy that is just so bizarre, it makes it even funnier. I don’t know what it is. I don’t want to know what it is. I just know I love those wacky Brits…
Easily one of the best scripts I’ve ever seen. The first time I saw this movie I couldn’t get over how good it was. I was amazed. I watched it over and over again. It sets a bar for comedy that not many are going to achieve. Especially people that come from Britain. People that come from Britain are already at a disadvantage when it comes to comedy. To set the bar extra high is almost like punching them in the face on top of that.
So, you should be watching Shaun of the Dead. You should be avoiding zombies. You should be killing anybody that has been bitten by a zombie. You’re always gonna need a shovel, a bucket, and a bat. You’ll know why when you know why. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
